Rototura

We are exploring part the Thermal Explorer Highway. This route goes from Auckland to Hawke's Bay, traveling thru the volcanic center of the North Island.

We choose to hike the less crowded Waimangu Volcanic Valley. On June 10, 1886 Mount Tarawera erupted with devastating effects, ripping a 17 km rift in the earth's surface and with it creating the Waimangu Valley.

We hike the entire volcanic valley to Lake Rotomahana. The Waimangu is the youngest geothermal system in the world.

After our hike we relax at the campground before we join our tour of the Mitai Māori Village. The tour is very interesting and educational.

About roughly 20% of the population is Māori. They show us some of their houses from way back and explain us their customs. We are also shown what each of the tattoos means on their faces.

At the end we are served a really tasty meal of lamb, chicken, regular potatoes, sweet potatoes, and cauliflower for us on hot stones covered by wood and blankets.
